Biological Significance
Keratin 73 is a keratin protein. Keratin refers to a family of fibrous structural proteins. Keratin is the key structural material making up the outer layer of human skin. It is also the key structural component of hair and nails. Keratin monomers assemble into bundles to form intermediate filaments, which are tough and insoluble and form strong unmineralized tissues found in reptiles, birds, amphibians, and mammals. The only other
biological matter known to approximate the toughness of keratinized tissue is chitin.
Immunogen
Keratin K74 antibody was raised in Guinea Pig using synthetic peptide of human keratin K74 coupled to KLH as the immunogen.
Preparation and Storage
Store at 2-8 degree C for short term storage. Aliquot and store at -20 degree C for long term storage. Avoid repeated freeze/thaw cycles.
Other Notes
Small volumes of anti-KRT74 antibody vial(s) may occasionally become entrapped in the seal of the product vial during shipment and storage. If necessary, briefly centrifuge the vial on a tabletop centrifuge to dislodge any liquid in the container`s cap. Certain products may require to ship with dry ice and additional dry ice fee may apply.

NCBI Summary for KRT74
Keratins are intermediate filament proteins responsible for the structural integrity of epithelial cells and are subdivided into epithelial keratins and hair keratins. This protein belongs to a family of keratins that are specifically expressed in the inner root sheath of hair follicles.[provided by RefSeq, Jun 2009]
UniProt Comments for KRT74
KRT74: Has a role in hair formation. Specific component of keratin intermediate filaments in the inner root sheath (IRS) of the hair follicle (Probable). Defects in KRT74 are a cause of woolly hair autosomal dominant (ADWH). A hair shaft disorder characterized by fine and tightly curled hair. Compared to normal curly hair that is observed in some populations, woolly hair grows slowly and stops growing after a few inches. Under light microscopy, woolly hair shows some structural anomalies, including trichorrhexis nodosa and tapered ends. Defects in KRT74 are the cause of hypotrichosis type 3 (HYPT3). A condition characterized by the presence of less than the normal amount of hair. Affected individuals have normal hair in early childhood but experience progressive hair loss limited to the scalp beginning in the middle of the first decade and almost complete baldness by the third decade. Body hair, beard, eyebrows, axillary hair, teeth, and nails develop normally. Belongs to the intermediate filament family.

1. These observations show for the first time that homozygosity for a KRT74 missense variant may be associated with autosomal recessive pure hair and nail ectodermal dysplasia.
