UniProt Comments for MAFA
Transcription factor that may play a role in neuroretina development. Can transactivate the QR1 promoter A box of the neuroretina-specific Q1 gene. In vitro, binds to CRE-type MARE 5'-TGCTGACGTCAGCA-3' and TRE-type MARE 5'-TGCTGACTCAGCA-3' DNA sequences (). May be involved in transcription regulation during lens development. Binds to the alphaCE2 enhancer element of the lens-specific alpha-A-crystallin gene.
Research Articles on MAFA
1. Results show that before L-Maf induction BMP activity is required for lens specification, whereas after L-Maf up-regulation, the early differentiation of primary lens fibre cells occurs independent of BMP signals.
